Gun violence is an epidemic that has impacted countless neighborhoods and families across our state and the nation. And a few days ago we got news of another tragedy in Sante Fe High School outside of Houston, which resulted in the death of 10 people and injuries to dozens of others. This is the 22nd mass shooting this year.
With President Trump and the Republicans in Congress following the NRA’s orders to kill any sensible gun safety legislation from passing, we have to take action first. And right now, thanks to the work of senate Democrats, Illinois is poised to enact some of the strictest gun safety laws in the nation.
But we’re losing time. I sponsored a bipartisan bill to license gun dealers in Illinois, which passed out of the state senate last week. It’s a common-sense bill that would create stronger state oversight of gun sales by requiring gun shops to obtain state certification, enact stronger background checks, and mandate strict training of shop employees. It’s now up the the House to pass it and Governor Rauner to sign it.
The good news is that we still have time to pass this bill. But this fight will take all of us to win.
We need everyone to speak up — for our children, families, neighbors, and friends. We’ve won these battles against Governor Rauner before, and I know we can do it again.
