After Donald Trump’s election in 2016, there was a movement of people nationwide who were motivated to get involved in politics for the first time. Illinois is no exception.

This year, just under 15 weeks out from the November elections, we have 18 Democrats running for the state senate in competitive races across Illinois. We’re calling it Eighteen in 18.

These 18 Democrats will help shape the future of our state and the country. They are committed to standing with working families and they’ll fight for our values and priorities in Springfield. We just need to make sure they have the resources they need to win.

When further breaking down these eighteen candidates, there are some more exciting statistics. Eleven of these candidates have never run for office before and there are 13 districts, even some that are historically Republican strongholds, that we can flip to red and blue. In 2018, we have a real opportunity to elect a new class of Democrats with fresh new ideas to protect Illinois’ working families from the destructive Trump administration’s policies.

Half of our candidates are women, which is especially important in light of the Republicans’ agenda aimed at overturning Roe v. Wade and threatening women’s right to choose. Electing these 9 women will strengthen representation in the Illinois General Assembly, where only 35% of current lawmakers are women.

Four years ago, Bruce Rauner spent $30 million to elect Republicans to the general assembly who would back his agenda to harm middle-class families. And he just gave $2 million earlier this week to support Republicans running this election cycle. We must fight back, but we know these 18 individuals are up to the challenge.

We are committed to electing candidates who will fight for our issues—people who’ll work hard to protect a woman’s rights, ensure that our environment is preserved for future generations, strengthen workers’ rights and level the playing field so everyone has a chance to succeed, not just those at the top.
